8th Chinese Bridge Speech Competition –

It may contain stale & outdated information. Or it may have grown more awesome with age, like the author.

I took part in this competition a few weeks ago. I had to learn the below speech off by heart and present it to a panel of three judges and the audience at the Chinese Consulate in Auckland. I’m not big on public speaking.

My wife helped me learn it well, constantly forcing me to improve my pronunciation. I think on the day I managed to surprise her – my (normally awful) 3rd tone came out well, for once.

We don’t know who one, and won’t until June. I don’t mind where I’m placed: the competition allows me to mingle with other Chinese language students (we are few and spread out here), and helps me get more accustomed to public speaking. Like that’ll ever happen.

Here is my speech:

Pretty good eh? Even got a quote from Napoleon.

I’m currently in the process of requesting a copy of the video they took of me presenting the speech. If I get it I’ll post it here.
